Our Skipper – Stephen Maughan

Stephen is a married father of one little boy. He started his working life in the Yorkshire coal mines, before redundancy forced him to find a new career. Cross-training into IT, Stephen worked for several large financial organizations in England, before finally joining a company in Glasgow. Once located in Scotland, and living only twenty minutes from the coast, it was inevitable that he would want a boat.

Starting as many people do with a small motor cruiser, it didn’t take long for the sailing bug to bite, and the cruiser was quickly replaced with a yacht. Stephen and his wife spent many years sailing the Firth of Clyde, West Coast of Scotland, including Skye and the Outer Hebrides, and the Irish coast. He has now been sailing over 10 years, and in that time has owned a variety of craft, including yachts, motor cruisers, RIBs and catamarans.

In 2005, he decided to put his experience gained over 15 thousand nautical miles to the test, and sat his RYA YachtMaster® practical examination (after first having completed all the theory and practical courses required). Passing this on a wild September night with a Southerly F8 blowing was no mean achievement, but pass he did. After a couple of seasons working for local companies as a charter skipper and for himself delivering yachts, Stephen decided to add to his CV by taking his Cruising Instructor exam. Having successfully gained his teaching endorsement, he spent last season teaching RYA practical courses up to Day Skipper level.

His enthusiasm for sailing and ability to pass on knowledge, skills, hints and tips ensure all his students / clients achieve their goals and leave the yacht having had a great experience.
